What is bandwidth?

( The Best Web Hosting Service )- There has been a lot of talk these days about bandwidth but what exactly is it?  The definition of bandwidth put very simply is the maximum amount of data that can be transferred at any given time.  It is usually measured in seconds.

While bandwidth sounds a lot like data transfer, they are two completely different things.  Data transfer refers to how much data is being transferred while bandwidth refers to how fast or slow the data is being transferred.

One easy way to remember it is by putting it into terms of a water pipe.  The width of the pipe itself is like the bandwidth and the amount of fluids flowing through it is like the data transfer.  A smaller pipe will only allow a small amount of fluid to travel through it at a time.  A larger pipe will provide a better flow and allow more water to travel through it.  Having a larger bandwidth will provide more data to be transferred in a quicker amount of time.

How will bandwidth affect your site?

Having a fast loading site is very important.  If you have a lower bandwidth, the items on your site will load at a much slower speed.  The bandwidth will control how fast or slow your site responds and will not have anything to do with the speed of the visitors connection.  If your site becomes very popular, you may run into a situation where people have to wait to view your site until some of the traffic has subsided.

Is there really such thing as unlimited bandwidth?

You are sure to have seen the marketing for unlimited bandwidth.  In order to draw business to their site, some hosting companies are using the promise of unlimited bandwidth.  This is something that sounds great but is not a realistic promise.

Any hosting company that advertises this is assuming that their webmasters will only use a small portion of the available bandwidth.  They can provide what seems like unlimited bandwidth by very careful planning and strict hardware monitoring.  The bandwidth capacity under such scrutiny will appear to never be depleted. How do you reduce bandwidth usage?

The size of your files will drastically impact your bandwidth abilities.  If you find that your bandwidth is costing a large amount of money there are some things that you can do.  Try to simplify your website.  Do not run too many fancy Flash presentations.  When you design your website, be sure to run any CSS or JavaScript functions running externally.  If you have many codes embedded into your site, the file will become very large and will use up your bandwidth very quickly.

One other thing that really affects your bandwidth is the number of robots on your page.  You can set up a filter for your site that will eliminate the possibility of rogue robots that will negatively affect the performance of your site.
